What is Self-Hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is the art of hypnotising oneself in order to bring about inner, personal change and so doesn't require the presence of a professional hypnotist.

Hypnosis is an activity that has been practised across time and cultures for millennia and is most often encountered in one of two ways - in entertainment or in therapy.

The entertainment variety can be seen in stage or TV shows in which volunteers agree to be hypnotised in front an audience for amusement and profit. The stage or TV variety certainly can be very amusing (for the audience) and very profitable (for the stage hypnotist). The amusement of the audience is derived from seeing ordinary people act in extraordinary ways at the command of the stage hypnotist.

It's the therapeutic form of hypnosis (hypnotherapy) that interests us here. Hypnotherapy is used in order to address health problems that have failed to respond to more usual treatments such as psychiatry, psychotherapy, counselling, mood altering drugs or will power. Used in these areas, hypnotherapy can bring about profound changes in behaviour, attitude, mood, self-awareness and address problematic emotional states such as anxiety, depression, phobias, etc.

Hypnotherapy can also bring about physiological changes such as anaesthesia and is used for this purpose by some physicians and dentists to anaesthetise a patient without the use of anaesthetising chemicals or gas. [For a detailed description and notes on the medical use of hypnotherapy please see 'Hartland's Medical and Dental Hypnosis', Harcourt Publishers 2002].

Self-hypnosis is used by countless numbers of people to improve their life experience without having to pay the fees of a professional hypnotist.
