Self-hypnosis is the art of hypnotising oneself in order to bring about inner, personal change and so doesn't require the presence of a professional hypnotist.
Hypnosis is an activity that has been practised across time and cultures for millennia and is most often encountered in one of two ways - in entertainment or in therapy.
The entertainment variety can be seen in stage or TV shows in which volunteers agree to be hypnotised in front an audience for amusement and profit. Used in these areas, hypnotherapy can bring about profound changes in behaviour, attitude, mood, self-awareness and address problematic emotional states such as anxiety, depression, phobias, etc.
Hypnotherapy can also bring about physiological changes such as anaesthesia and is used for this purpose by some physicians and dentists to anaesthetise a patient without the use of anaesthetising chemicals or gas.
